Jewellery Aftercare

Caring For Your Jewellery

Jewellery is one of our most cherished and personal accessories and with insight on how to care for it correctly, you’ll be able to maintain its beauty and lustre for generations to come. The importance of aftercare can play a big role in the longevity of your custom made piece. Here at Durham Rose, we would advise cleaning diamond and gemstone set jewellery at home using warm, soapy water and gently being brushed using a soft non-metallic brush. It is then advisable to dry with a soft cloth or air dry (not under strong or direct sunlight). Use only a mild soap if needed and avoid harsh cleaners, such as bleach or ammonia. Soft porous gemstones, such as emeralds, pearls and turquoise, should never be soaked. Simply wipe them down with a clean and moist cloth. You can minimise damage by ensuring that you remove your rings when performing household chores and sports. We also advise that you limit your jewellery’s exposure to sunlight and extreme temperatures as this can also damage the stone.

How To Safely Store Your Jewellery

Jewellery storage is an often overlooked element of aftercare. It should never be tossed into drawers because that’s how you can easily scratch metal and gemstones. Each item should be stored away separately in a box or pouch; these are provided by us at Durham Rose as part of your journey with us. A jewellery box is an ideal piece of storage for you to have, to allow your beautiful pieces to be kept in the best possible condition whilst you are not wearing them.

Metal care

Precious metals are soft and will scratch, tarnish and finishes will wear over time. The speed at which this will happen depends how much the metal is exposed to wear, especially it coming into contact with other metal or hard materials

Platinum

Platinum is a outstandingly durable and precious metal but with daily wear it can sustain small scratches and develop a patina which dulls the metal down over time. This can be removed by a professional jeweller and returned back to its original reflective state. As Platinum is such a malleable metal when it is polished the metal is displaced – not lost – so the metal will not wear down.

Palladium

Palladium will show some scratches over time but like palladium the metal is displaced and will not wear down. As the ring ages, the small marks come together to form a patina that most people find pleasant. If you want to restore a ring to its original high polish or matt finish, we can re-polish/refinish it for you.

White Gold

18K white gold jewellery is Rhodium plated which results in a bright white finish. With daily wear rhodium plating can gradually fade to reveal the natural colour of white gold which has a yellowish-off white tone. This can easily be re-plated and restored to its original luster.

Yellow Gold and Rose Gold

Yellow gold and Rose gold are beautifully luxurious metals but can show scratches from daily wear and tear. A quick buff with a soft jewellers cloth should brighten it up. To remove deeper scratches it would have to be polished with a professional polishing wheel.
